Individual, team records highlight Day 2 of March Madness

After a bizarre start to the Men’s NCAA Tournament, water might have found its level after Day 2.

The opening 16 games featured 6 lower-seed upsets and plenty more scares. Friday’s action was a bit more chalky, just two upsets – both 8/9 matchups.

History was made on multiple fronts as Purdue guard Braden Smith became the NCAA’s all-time leader in career assists, and Florida put up historic numbers in its blowout win.

Kentucky 89 – Santa Clara 84 F/OT
The wildest game of the day happened to be the first game of the day, as 7-seed Kentucky needed a buzzer-beater to force OT and eventually beat 10-seed Santa Clara.

Texas Tech 91 – Akron 71
The 12-seed Zips hung around for an extended portion of the second half, but eventually the Red Raiders pounced and won by 20.

Arizona 92 – Long Island 58
Top-seed Arizona had no issue with the fan-favorite LIU Sharks, starting a run of dominance for high seeds following Duke’s scare on Thursday.

Virginia 82 – Wright State 73
14-seed Wright State came oh-so-close to pulling off the tournament’s biggest upset, up by 3 on 3-seed Virginia with 5 minutes left. The Cavs then ended the game on a 15-3 run.

Iowa State 108 – Tennessee State 74
2-seed Iowa State became the first of three teams to eclipse the century mark, blowing out 15-seed Tennessee State.

Alabama 90 – Hofstra 70
Make no mistake, the 13-seed Hofstra gave Alabama a big challenge, but the 4-seed Crimson Tide pulled away late.

Utah State 86 – Villanova 76
In one of the more edge-of-your-seat games, the 9-seed Aggies jumped out to an early lead, then let Villanova take a big lead, before fighting back and winning by 10.

Tennessee 78 – Miami (OH) 56
The 11-seed Redhawks historic season comes to an end, suffering a blowout loss at the hands of 6-seed Tennessee. Miami (OH) end the year at 31-2.

Iowa 67 – Clemson 61
First-year head coach Ben McCollum leads 9-seed Iowa to its first NCAA tournament win in 5 years, holding off a late Clemson rally.

St. John’s 79 – Northern Iowa 53
The 5-seed Red Storm cooked up a storm against 12-seed Northern Iowa, starting the game on a 10-0 run before beating the Panthers in blowout fashion.

UCLA 75 – UCF 71
The 7-seed Bruins jumped out to a big first-half lead, but 10-seed UCF refused to back down until the final buzzer sounded.

Purdue 104 – Queens 71
15-seed Queens hung around for the better part of the first half, but a strong run into and out of halftime gives 2-seed Purdue a comfortable win. PG Braden Smith broke the NCAA’s all-time assist record.

Florida 114 – Prairie View A&M 55
The defending champions enjoy the second-largest margin of victory in NCAA Tournament history, blowing out 16-seed Prairie View A&M in historic fashion.

Kansas 68 – Cal Baptist 60
Up by 20+ for the majority of the game, 4-seed Kansas might have found itself sleepwalking into the second half. 13-seed Cal Baptist nearly made the Jayhawks pay, a fervent comeback attempt thwarted in the final minute.

Miami 80 – Missouri 66
In one of the more thrilling games of the day, 7-seed Miami and 10-seed Mizzou fought back and forth until the Hurricanes pulled away late.

UConn 82 – Furman 71
The 2-seed UConn Huskies were given everything they could handle from 15-seed Furman, who hung around until the end before Dan Hurley’s Huskies overpowered the Paladins.
